In the spring of 2020, all sports were brought to a standstill throughout our nation because of the coronavirus pandemic. This impacted millions of athletes, including our own high school seniors who saw their spring season cancelled.
During the home game on Saturday, the 2020 Blue Devil Baseball Seniors were honored on our home field. These young men began their journey as Blue Devils in the seventh grade, working with determination toward their goals. In 2019, the Blue Devil team advanced to the second round of playoffs, with great hopes of further advancement in the 2020 season. These Blue Devils played their final game at Northeast Community College defeating West Point 2-1.
A plaque that will hang at Blue Devil field was presented to the seniors and reads as follows:
In 2020, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the High School Baseball season was cancelled. The senior players were not able to play their final game on this field. These senior players have signed a baseball that was buried under home plate. They will forever be a part of every run scored at Water Valley High School.
This group has played a combined 2000 innings and accounted for over 500 runs scored and 200 hits before their high school career was cut short.
