Pamela Redwine from the Yalobusha MS Extension Office came to the Health Science 2 class today and taught the students what it is like to walk in an elderly person’s shoes. The program is called Gray for a Day and teaches students empathy by helping them experience what it is like to have disorders such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration by wearing special glasses, taping fingers and putting on gloves to show decreased sense of touch and arthritis, cotton in ears and nose to experience decreased sense of smell and hearing, walking with neuropathy by putting corn kernels in their shoes, and tying a grandchild’s shoe laces with arthritis and poor vision. Mrs. Redwine is an excellent teacher and we appreciate her coming to share this great program with our students.
After several readings of Bear Says Thanks by Karma Wilson, Mrs. Sain’s class re-enacted the story, having a feast on a quilt, tasting peppermint tea and saying “Thanks!”

Aa’rin McDougal, a nurse practitioner and parent, was a guest speaker who came to the Health Science class on Friday to discuss her careers and job responsibilities. She discussed getting an EMT certification and then RN degree from Holmes in Grenada MS. She later decided to obtain her nurse practitioner license from MUW. She discussed the jobs she had and pros and cons to the profession. She told us about her experiences as a travel nurse during COVID and how hospitals are different in other states. We appreciate her taking her time to come to Health Science classes and educate us in the areas of nursing our students can pursue. Thank you!
